Participating Communities - Goulais

In 1859, after the signing of the Pennefather Treaty, a number of Batchewana First Nation members decided not to relocate to Garden River so seven hundred and two acres of land was purchased in Goulais Bay. In 1879 & 1885, Orders in Council set apart from the surrendered lands 1595 acres on Goulais Bay as Goulais Bay Reserve 15A for the use and benefit of Batchewana First Nation members. It is located about 32 kilometers North of Sault Ste Marie off of Highway 552.

Approximately 60 members currently reside there. This community has established its own planning committee to facilitate the rapidly growing housing and economic development of the reserve. Also, a satellite office was established and necessary to meet the increasing needs of the community members in Goulais Bay.
